There is a fine piece by Nick Talbot on his ‘Police Diver’s Notebook’ blog about a new book of music-related artwork by William Schaff. As Nick says, you probably know Schaff’s work even if you did not realise it. Especially if you have records by Gravenhurst in your collection. And you do have records by Gravenhurst in your collection don’t you?
What really interested me was that the book has been put out by the Graveface label - a label that I admit I had all but lost track of over the years. This is often the case as lives progresses and you lose track of time and suddenly... well, suddenly you glance back at your archives and realise nearly a full decade has passed since that first Black Moth Super Rainbow EP on Graveface (the magical, long out of print ‘Falling Through A Field’) and goodness, where did those years go?
I’m suddenly reminded that there were some great records put out by Graveface around that time. Dreamend, Monster Movie, Spires That In The Sunset Rise and of course the aforementioned Black Moth Super Rainbow. And whilst they are lovely to revisit, I really ought to catch up with some of the label’s more recent offerings.
And finally, by some splendid piece of synchronicity I noticed too that in an old reviews piece I picked up on the Warp re-issue of ‘Flashlight Seasons’ (with its Schaff cover) and followed it in the next paragraph with something about BMSR’s ‘Start A New People’. Jigsaw puzzles fitting together making strangely beautiful pictures. It’s what life’s all about.
