It was mentioned in the past that I did not know if there were any Scottish connections in the very excellent Leeds’ band ‘Flies On You. Well it transpires that although the roots are very much in the dark Yorkshire soil there is indeed a heritage that spreads north of the border. Take it from me, the Yorkshire/Scottish blend is a genius mix.
If you haven’t already picked up on Flies On You then you have missed out. You have a treat and a half waiting for you on their new website, from which you can pick up on their fabulous cover of Altered Images’ ‘Dead Pop Stars’ and the scratchy, scrawny and snarling debut ‘Nothing To Write Home About’ set. Rarely was a record more ironically titled.
Some would say that Flies On You are exactly the kind of band that John Peel would have fast tracked into the Radio 1 studios for sensational sessions and they would be right. In the post-Peel world it is fitting then that they will be featuring in session on the Mark Whitby Show on Dandelion Radio throughout the coming month. Three re-recorded versions of album tracks and one never-heard-before new song are on the menu. I can’t wait.
And, since one really ought not to need an excuse, here is the video for ‘Slashing It Down’ again. Has there been a finer critique of the past few years of UK coalition government in song? No, thought not.
