Compilations are such difficult things. Everyone has their opinions on what should be there and what would be better left on the cutting room floor. I remember when one of the Subway label collections came out, Pete Williams wrote that he wanted to take a knife and put a scratch through every track except The Clouds. I recall thinking that was a bit harsh, but I could see where he was coming from up to a point. The new Indietracks compilation made me feel much the same way.
Instead of taking a knife to the record, however, these days it’s easy to just delete the tracks from your playlist (or programme a new tracklist on your CD player if you prefer the hi-fi route). My playlist is below. I’ve erased more than half the original two CD set from my mind/hard drive and like to think what I’ve come up with is the perfect solution. No doubt you might disagree, so here’s a new game for you: tell us your own personal Indietracks compilation playlist. And if anyone says ‘oh but I love ALL the songs and ALL the groups; they are ALL so lovely and yummy and blah blah blah’ then I WON’T BELIEVE YOU.
If you don’t have a copy of the Indietracks compilation, you can pick one up here (although it appears to be temporarily out of stock!). At six quid a throw for a double CD collection, it’s damn good value, even if, like me, you end up with only one CD’s worth of stuff you want to hear more than once. Thanks to Make Do And Mend for making the effort with it all. I'll be playing some selections from the compilation on the next This Is Pop! radio show, which will be on the 28th July. Coincidentally, that's the weekend of the festival...
