Attention all you London types! At a loose end this fine evening? Then get yourself along to The Gramaphone in Spitalfields and let Phil Wilson entertain you with a selection of fine songs from his not inconsiderable canon (oo-er missus). There are another three groups on the bill, including The Postcards, who I have never heard and the Pocketbooks, who I have, but wish I hadn't. Sorry. I know that old adage that if you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all, but really... I remember once Peter Williams write about wanting to take a knife to a Subway compilation, gouging a hefty scratch through every track except The Clouds'. I want to do the same with the 7" that The Pocketbooks share with The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart...
On a more positive note, however, it appears that the opening group will be the very, very brilliant Still Corners, whose Remember Pepper set dropped into my lap yesterday. And what a beauty it is, from a sleeve that recalls '60s French films (blurred, very possibly) to a sound that is part Mazzy Star, part Broadcast, and part Left Outsides if they traded in 1950's Visions Of Tomorrow. Or something along those lines... I mean, come on, it's not even 9am and I'm meant to come up with witty and wonderful descriptions of Pop music? I need much more coffee for that.
Right, I'm off to phone a plumber.
(PS: I meant The Parallelograms and not the Pocketbooks. But see this post for explanation.... gosh, life is so complicated sometimes)
Oh dear ... there could be a case of mistaken identity! I think you mean you want to take a knife to The Parallelograms side of the split with The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart :) Mind you, I don't exactly have my finger on the pulse so it's possible that another Pains split has been released since I bought mine...
You're right, though, about Still Corners. The tracks on myspace are very pretty!
P.S. Who's Peter Williams? I think he and I need to have words :)
