We were walking out to the Barton Cross, going to meet up with my work colleagues for our Christmas / end of term dinner. My torch shone on the bare trees, ghostly in the dark above us. C slipped her gloved hand in mine and said, “Just think, from here on, the days are getting longer. Winter’s nearly over!” She was right of course. At least about the days getting longer.
It reminded me of six months before, when the days started to get shorter. The day I decided to shut up shop with Tangents after ten years.
It prompted me to have a look at the Tangents page again, and it made me smile sadly. I don’t regret shutting it all down, you understand. The past six months have been a rollercoaster ride at times, but that’s all fine. I can safely say I’ve been enjoying music more in these past few months than I had for several years previously. I’m enjoying drawing enormously, both for my own purposes and for illustrating John Carney’s fabulous new serial ‘The Outside Of Everything’. The world generally feels like a shiny and delightful place to be hanging out…
Still, I felt that the Tangents archive deserved a better front page. And after much tinkering over the past few days, I think it now does. Hopefully the searching options are much improved. After all, there is a lot to search through – several thousand pages of words, at least, covering ten years of musing by a whole host of people. There are also links (literally!) to the present and future, with RSS headline feeds from this blog, plus Daniel’s excellent ‘Backed With’ project and the aforementioned ‘Outside of Everything’ weekly serial (the search, incidentally, covers those sources as well). It’s certainly not a ‘Tangents 2’ or anything like that, but I hope it manages to span the past, present and future. Let me know what you think.
