Fire Escape Talking wades in with a rampaging diatribe against Bobby Gillespie. And just when I’ve been playing that old eponymous second Primal Scream set again and enjoying it a great deal more than I was ever capable of previously. I still can’t bring myself to listening to ‘Zep’ though. Music for long hairs. Which is probably why Bobby likes them so much.
Elsewhere, Dan is waxing lyrically about Vampire Weekend. And why wouldn’t he indeed? For they do sound rather ravishingly fine. As Dan says, they recall something of the syncopated delirium of early James or even Feelies. For they sound for all the world like boys with perpetual nervousness. And that is no bad thing, clearly. Plus they look delicious, like preppy Jojo’s off to The Hamptons for the weekend or a Cape Cod Pale Fountains. So I’m devouring the ‘Mansard Roof’ video downloaded off iTunes and eagerly awaiting my copy of the 7” vinyl. Isn’t it great when you have a new favourite group?
On another day, in another mood (one that wholeheartedly embraces the sound of fuzzy pop), The Pains of Being Pure at Heart could be a new favourite group too. Thanks to Martijn for pointing me in their direction. They have a fine line in song titles, which as you well know always has me beaming like a loon. I mean, come on, how can you not dig songs called ‘Doing All the Things That Wouldn't Make Your Parents Proud’ and ‘This Love is Fucking Right!’? Right.
