I have been playing the new album by The Lodger a lot. I love it to pieces. There are so many highlights, but at the moment I am obsessing over ‘Free Period’, not least because when it starts I am instantly reminded of Arab Strap’s ‘The First Big Weekend’. Now wasn’t THAT a startling moment in Pop history? But I also obsess over ‘Free Period’ simply for the scholastic reference of the title. Of course no-one calls them ‘free periods’ anymore. ‘Non-contact’, ‘TLR’, ‘Vis Arts’, ‘management time’ are the preferred descriptions, at least around these parts. ‘Free’? I bloody wish…
