SODASTREAM
From Perth in Australia, Sodastream are Karl Smith (vocals, guitar) and Pete Cohen (double bass and deeply baritone backing vocals). Their debut single was plucked from the slush pile by John Peel and not long after they were awarded single of the week in Melody Maker by Moby. Since then they?ve released four albums on some of the most renowned indie labels around the world including Tugboat, Rough Trade, Drive-in Records and Acuarela Discos, and earned comparison to the likes of Low, Nick Drake and Will Oldham. On their latest album "Reservations" they jump effortlessly from acoustic introspection and instrumentals to raucous singalong shanties without any hint of affectation. Even with the additions of horns, harmonicas, and the drums on their studio albums, the core of their sound remains the same as it is live ? Smith?s acoustic guitar, Pete?s driving double bass and some of the best, most beautiful songwriting to come out of Australia in years.
"One of Australia's best kept secrets, they are up there with the Lucksmiths as one of the country's finest contemporary exports, and I guess it's no surprise that there is something of the spirit of the Go-Betweens intrinsic in their sound." (Tangents)

THE CLIENTELE
The Clientele are a four piece who formed in Hampshire in 1997, initially through a love of Cardinal, Felt, Galaxie 500, Television, Love and The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band. Later the influence of 70s AM radio songwriters like Jimmy Webb or Mickey Newbury made itself clear, along with a dual interest in minimalist arrangements and jazz chords and rhythms. They have been described as sounding as if they are beaming in from a long-wave radio on a late lonely night.
Following a move to London in 1998, The Clientele set about releasing 7-inch singles through different labels in UK, Spain, Japan and USA, and then compiled these to produce the eloquent, soft-focus beauty of their debut album "Suburban Light" released on Pointy Records in November 2000 and later licensed to Merge Records for release in USA where the band has enjoyed sell out tours across the country.
Their next album "The Violet Hour" was recorded through the summer and autumn of 2002 and released the following summer. It wa described by Uncut Magazine as one of the most magical pop albums of 2003. Their latest album "Strange Geometry" was released in the USA on Merge Records, and the UK on Pointy Records and features 12 tracks of dreamy folk-pop, shimmering psych guitars and string arrangements by the magisterial genius Louis Philippe.
Looks good, doesn't it? We're seriously considering going there.

I'd really love to go, obviously, but i have a trip to London from the 11th to the 14th already planned for the BETT conference / exhibition, and i'm up again on the 26th for the Esiotrot show, so sadly I can't really afford it :-(
