Who stole the music?

It’s radio day today. This morning Leigh and I had a lovely conversation about Swedish Pop for the next instalment of the Unpopular Tangents slot for her Sydney radio show. Not sure when it will broadcast. Probably on Tuesday 16th September… I will post when it’s going live, and then when it’s available as a podcast.

This afternoon, meanwhile, it’s the next ‘ This Is Pop’ show for Phonic FM. Lots of great tunes to spin, including new stuff from Herman Dune, Ballboy, Fujiya and Miyaki, Stereolab, Phil Wilson, Northern Portrait, Summer Cats, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart and of Montreal. Plus some great old treats from Trash Can Sinatras, Associates, Black Star and Strange Fruit Project. I’ve been particularly excited by Strange Fruit Project recently. I only just picked up on their releases in the last month or so, which shows how much I pay attention to the Hip Hop world. But the records are so glorious. I’ve been digging them so much.

There’s going to be a new This Is Pop! radio show tomorrow if anyone is interested. Radio Drill Time

Hope some of you managed to find the time to tune into the This is Pop! radio show this afternoon on Phonic FM. It was my first time in the swanky new studio and the big mixing desk was a bit daunting, I have to admit. Still, I only pressed the wrong buttons once I think (the fact that the live web feed seemed to die fifteen minutes or so from the end of the show was due to some other technical factor, I am sure!) and apart from dropping a CD case whilst talking, I think it was all quite smooth. Thanks to Graham for the encouraging text messages and Liz for the email; both helped me pretend that I was not just broadcasting to the void!

If you missed it, and don’t mind a large file download and a hissy, low-fo quality recording at the end of it all, you can grab the whole two hours (or, rather, one hour and 44 minutes) of it here. What got cut off? Well, only me waxing lyrically about April Showers, Sunset Gun doing the Bee Gees and the Bee Gees themselves closing things out. I’m still trying to get that end of show thing down.

After Tuesday’s broadcast of the Unpopular Tangents slot on Leigh’s Tape Relay show, I’ll be on the radio again this weekend, with the third installment of my This Is Pop! show on Exeter’s local Phonic FM station. I’m still throwing around ideas for the show, but the provisional playlist at the moment is below. I don’t expect it will change a great deal between now and Sunday afternoon between 4 and 6pm.  For Exeter based readers, you can tune in on the radio waves at 106.8FM and for everyone else, you can join the fun on the Interweb at www.phonic.fm (just click on the ‘Listen’ button…).
