You remember that 2008 advent thing I did? Remember how Je Suis Animal’s excellent ‘The Mystery Of Marie Roget’ was up there at number four? Well, it looks like I’ll get to include it in my 2009 version too.

‘The Mystery Of Marie Roget’ 7” & download single
Angular Recordings
20th April 2009
On 20th April 2009, Angular Recordings release the first single from Norwegian based Je Suis Animal’s debut album ‘Self-Taught Magic From A Book.’ The album was released in the UK in December last year to great acclaim, quotes below.
The single, ‘The Mystery Of Marie Roget’ has an accompanying video made by director Amund Hesbøl. Set in the late 1920’s, the video draws inspiration from Bunuel and Dali’s surrealist classic Un Chien Andalou, and can be viewed at jesuisanimal.com
'The Mystery of Marie Roget' is a melodic pop-pearl of a song, apparently sweet and breezy but revealing - with lyrics inspired by an Edgar Allen Poe novel of the same name - motives of a darker nature.
'Secret Place' on the other hand, is a joyous rush of dreamy vocal, cocooned within a stinging wall of guitar. The sound of a sleepless and dizzying summer day..
Je Suis Animal will be launching the single and an April tour, at the Victoria in Mile End, London on the 24th April
I listened to Je Suis Animal again last night - first time in a while, and their sparkle has yet to diminish, a year on from first hearing the album.
