Just playing a new mix on iTunes, which had reached ‘The Cup Is Fierce’ by Paul Newman. Firefox loaded up the MySpace page for Popklubb and ‘Apathy’ by Lichtenstein came on. The two mixed together rather marvellously for a moment, and it reminded me suddenly of the kinds of fun and games we used to get up to at The Living Room, mixing up all kinds of stuff together in one big melting pot. Often at the same time... I have to say also that it’s the only time I’ve heard a Lichtenstein track and really liked it. So there’s a tip for them; give yourselves a nice post-rocking groove instead of an anaemic indiepop dirge and you’ll be made. Don’t suppose I’ll make a lot of friends by suggesting that, but hey ho.
Incidentally, I tried the single song on a mix idea for Crsytal Stilts (‘Prismatic Room’) and it works a treat! Now it reminds me of how I always felt about Telescopes. I never had much time for them except when a single song would take me by surprise on a mix or in a club. Admittedly the club angle didn’t happen often. In fact it was just once, when Stephen span an early single at SubCulture. Now there’s a blast from the past. SubCulture. In Pebbles discotheque, Troon. Thursdays nights wasn’t it? What is it about venues only ever giving left-of centre music nights the dregs of the week? Well I suppose it could be worse. It could be Wednesdays. Or Sundays. As I recall Stephen made a John Squire (or Jackson Pollock) type action painting on a big sheet as a backdrop. We got Hope to play there on their Scottish tour with Aspidistra… Aspidistra decided not to make the trip to the seaside, which was a shame, but you couldn’t really blame them. Here’s the flyer I made for the show. Quadrophenia reference point, of course.
And speaking of which (Thursday nights of Pop, that is, not Quadrophenia references), there is another Exeter Goes Pop! this Thursday. Orlando has made a much better poster than I ever did, with a neat Pavement theme. Hopefully it will do the trick and persuade some punters to venture out on a Thursday night. I think that The Young Sensation are due to play a short set, though sadly I won’t be in attendance due to school commitments. Other school commitments mean I’ll also miss the Let’s Wrestle show at the Cavern. Still, I’ve been spinning their rather fine ‘In Loving Memory Of…’ EP recently and loving it. It’s great to hear some new songs. I can’t believe it’s nearly two years since they first thrilled me. Two years! Where does the time go? It’s scary.
